Once
upon a time,
before the town of Portsmouth was founded, this coastline was made
up of creeks, low-lying marsh and water. Over the centuries the coastline
has altered, but the town's position here on the south coast, its
proximity to the open sea, coupled with control of the harbour and
its entrance, have secured Portsmouth's place in history as one of
the world's great anchorages and a rendezvous for British shipping
in times of war for over 800 years

The Tutor to the household will be happy to school you in the use of the quill and teach the children their letters.
The master at arms will expect everyone over the age of eight to be

their skill and looking for new recruits for the town Trayned Band.
Beside the huge fireplace our maid will show you a collection of Tudor
clothing. Find out how sweetmeats are made and how to churn butter.
See what everyday items are found in her oak chest.
To complete a full day’s Tudor experience we can offer a complementary visit to Southsea Castle on the same day, either morning or afternoon.

and Southsea Castle.
For the Square Tower your class can be dropped off and picked up at
the junction of Broad Street and High Street.

Outreach Workshops - Playing Away (KS1/Early Yrs)
Playing is never just a thing of the past. The aim is to allow the children to play and investigate. They will find out about board and card games, games of skill, dolls, figures and puppets and how all these pastimes have changed through time.
This session will provide the chance to compare old and new, identify different materials, group similar toys such as toy vehicles and find out how simple mechanical toys developed right up to our own time.
It can also be tailored for Key Stage 2 age groups.

Outreach Workshops - 1940s Family (KS 2)
The 1940s Family examines the impact that the Second World War had on people’s everyday lives through artefacts, posters and documents. Find out what it was like to be at school during the war.
Discover how rationing affected people and what items they used in order to ‘make do’.
This engaging session will illustrate the trials of the evacuation, the struggles of rationing and the power of propaganda. Re-live a practice gas attack, try on different clothing and play a game from the period.
