Once upon a time,
before the town of Portsmouth was founded, this coastline was made up of creeks, low-lying marsh and water. Over the centuries the coastline has altered, but the town's position here on the south coast, its proximity to the open sea, coupled with control of the harbour and its entrance, have secured Portsmouth's place in history as one of the world's great anchoranges and a rendevouz for British shipping in times of war for over 800 years

Creative dialogues exhibition posterCreative Dialogues: The Practical Study Group is a new visually stunning exhibition at the City Museum in Portsmouth.

In this touring exhibition the Practical Study Group attempts to demonstrate, visually, the real value of creative dialogue.

The show features a large selection of recent works by this diverse group of nationally and internationally renowned artists and tutors. Embroidery and stitched textiles are an important part of our heritage and this exhibition demonstrates how they offer a new language for the expressive arts today. Each piece in the exhibition has been made in collaboration with an artist of a different medium, demonstrating visually the real value of creative dialogue. The pieces are shown alongside that of their collaborators in a number of different ways to illustrate the importance of working together.

'A Study in Sherlock: Uncovering The Arthur Conan Doyle Collection'

Following the phenomenally successful and hugely popular introductory Exhibition in summer 2006, a fully interactive permanent exhibition of this international Collection has now been created at Portsmouth City Museum, in a newly refurbished gallery of its own.

The display explores further the life of Arthur Conan Doyle and the creation of Sherlock Holmes. It features a range of interactive displays, a ‘new’ Sherlock Holmes mystery, and narration by Stephen Fry, the Patron of the Collection. Come and experience the world of Sherlock Holmes and fine-tune your own powers of detection!

The exhibition is open at Portsmouth City Museum, 10.00am – 5.30pm (5.00pm during winter season), Monday to Sunday with FREE access to all.
